Biography
Stefani Joanne Angelina Germonotta, a.k.a. Lady GaGa, got her nickname from music producer Rob Fusari, who believed that her vocal style was similar to that of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. He dubbed her "GaGa" after the band's 1984 song, Radio Ga Ga, and she later chose to use that as part of her official stage name.
Lady GaGa was born March 28th, 1985 in Yonkers, New York and attended a private Catholic school. She began playing piano at the age of four and was writing piano music by the time she was 13. The following year she began performing for open mic nights around New York City. She began attending the Tisch School of Arts at New York University at age 17, but eventually withdrew to focus on her career. In 2004, she was performing around the city and working as a songwriter at Interscope Records. It was there that she developed the industry contacts to get her first big break.
She moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to finish her first album, The Fame, which debuted in late October. The album received critical acclaim and the first three singles from the album, Just Dance, Poker Face, and LoveGame all became number one billboard hits. At the same time her album was released, Lady GaGa began touring as an opening act with New Kids on The Block to help them promote the release of their new album. She then began a tour of her own, The Fame Ball Tour, in the first quarter of 2009. In late 2009, she was supposed to begin touring with rapper Kanye West, but after his intoxicated rampage at the MTV Video Music Awards, that was canceled. Instead, began touring solo in November 2009.
Lady GaGa's single, Just Dance, was nominated for Best Dance Recording at the 2009 Grammys. She also received a total of nine nominations for the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, winning Best New Artist while her single, Paparazzi, won two awards: Best Art Direction and Best Special Effects. She continues to grow professionally and has used her influence to speak out on the issue of gay rights. She joined in the National Equality March on Washington D.C. on October 11, 2009.
