Biography
Jessica Marie Alba was born in Pomona, California on April 28th, 1981. Her father's military career with the United States Air Force necessitated several major moves throughout her childhood. The family was first transferred to Biloxi, Mississippi, then back to California, and then to Del Rio, Texas. Ultimately her family finally settled for a time in Southern California when she was nine 9 years old. But it was not until age twelve that she would take her first acting class, having won the grand prize of free classes in an acting competition. She was signed to an agent only nine months later.
In 1994, using the name "Jessica Marie Alba," she won a small part in the movie Camp Nowhere. However, the film's leading female role of Gail landed in her lap when another actress dropped out. This big screen acting credit helped her land respectable television guest roles on The Secret World of Alex Mack and Chicago Hope.
She dropped her middle name and re-branded herself as "Jessica Alba" in 1995 and played the leading role of Maya Graham in the television series, Flipper. In 1999 she returned to the big screen as Kristen in Never Been Kissed and Molly in Idle Hands, and in 2005 she won the role of exotic dancer, Nancy Callahan, in the movie version of the graphic novel Sin City. Although she has continued to have some success in smaller television and movie roles, she is best known as the female lead in the Fox television series Dark Angel and for role as Invisible Woman (Sue Storm) in the Fantastic Four movie franchise.
Alba has been active in both charitable and political organizations. In 2005 she made a offer to movie producer Bob Weinstein: she would act in one of his films for free if he would bid $100,000 for tennis lessons in an AIDS charity auction. Her own charitable endeavors include activism and donations to Habitat for Humanity, The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Love Our Children USA and the Revlon Walk for Women. In 2006, she was on the verge of litigation with Playboy Magazine over the use of a promotional movie photograph without her permission. She dropped the lawsuit after a personal apology from Hugh Hefner and the agreement that he would make a large donation to two charitable organizations of her choice.
Politically, she has supported such initiatives as Declare Yourself, a non-profit, non-partisan organization aimed at empowering young voters. She also actively campaigned on behalf of Barack Obama in the 2008 election.
